As they are hard to analyze, a simpler geometric model that is chaotic in the same way has been proposed. Smale’s 14th problem was to prove that the original Lorenz flow is equivalent to the geometric model. In this talk I intend to describe the geometric model and a recent extension that preserves more of the global topology of the flow. I’ll explain how this new model is strongly related to the geodesic flow on the modular surface, and how it yields a way to approach analytically Smale’s 14th problem. Abstract
