Abstract
Permutation statistics is a branch of enumerative combinatorics, which explores the distribution of various combinatorial and algebraic parameters on the symmetric group.  We will survey classical to most recent results, which relate character evaluations to permutation statistics with emphasis on the role of higher Lie characters in the interplay between cycle structure, descent sets and the enumeration of k-roots.

Time allowing, we will discuss related constructions of multiplicity-free modules for classical and affine Weyl groups.

Based on joint works with Ron Adin and Pal Hegedus.
