Outreach

Top mathematicians, Field medalists, Wolf prize winners, directors of research institutes, have participated in the different activities of the Institute – the research activities, the collaborative programs, the prestigious Emmy Nether Lectures and the different workshops and conferences. The institute is physically located in Bar-Ilan University but supported collaborative research is carried out between other Israeli universities and German Institutes.

In what follows, we shall elaborate on the different programs listed above.

ENI Postdoctoral Fellows

The Institute has hosted postdoctoral fellows from all over the world.  The fellows came for half a year up to three years, depending on their research plans and tenure track offers.  About 80% of the postdoctoral fellows continued on to an academic career in high level universities (including, Bonn, Oxford, Humboldt, BGU, BIU, Tata, Shanghai, Moscow, Ankara,… ) and academic colleges, while 20% developed careers in knowledge based Industries (like Google, space agencies, startup companies…).

In what follows, we list the postdocs who received fellowships from the Institute from 1992 and on. For every fellow, we indicate the university from where the postdoc received his Ph.D., the years spent in the Institute, and his field of interest.

ENI Research Projects

An ENI Research Project is a focused program carried out at the Institute in collaboration with international colleagues, and with participation of Postdoctoral Fellows. Occasionally, Ph.D. students from Bar-Ilan participated in a project. Each project is coordinated by a local researcher. Related workshops were organized as part of each Local Research Project.

The topics of research have evolved over the years, starting from Algebra, Geometry, and Function Theory, and related fields such as Automorphic Forms, Topology and Combinatorics, and applications. In the last decade, there has been an additional significant focus on applications to Computer Vision, Cryptography and Robotics, Engineering (electro optics, nanotechnology, agriculture, medical devices) and Neural Computation.

Outreach

Popularization Programs

  • Exhibition "Jewish Mathematicians in Germany" was created by Moritz Epple,    a science historian from Munster, with the collaboration of the topologist Wolfgang Lücke from Bonn University.  In 2011, it was translated into English and transported to Israel to be presented at the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora at Tel Aviv University and at the ENI. This project was funded by the BMBF, and the ENI was involved in the local arrangements. The exhibition was accompanied by a two day conference in Jerusalem that included analysis of the impact of pre-war mathematics in Germany on new developments of today and was addressed to Young Researchers and up.

  • Panel “Popularization of Mathematics” Prof. Gunter Ziegler, from the Free University of Berlin (currently the president of the University), was invited in 2014 to present at the International Mathematical Conference in Seoul, in a panel that Prof. M. Teicher organized. The panel “Popularization of Mathematics” raised the awareness to the modern applications of mathematics.

  • IMAGINARY came to the Emmy Noether Institute of Bar-Ilan University in December 2015 on the occasion of the 50 year long diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel. It was an interactive exhibition of models of various algebraic surfaces in 3-space.  It was developed by the MFO in Oberwolfach. The models created are based on SURFER – a computer program that helps visualize real algebraic geometry in real-time. The surfaces visualized are given by the zero set of a polynomial equation in 3 variables. It was organized as part of the Research in Germany campaign of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with the aim of strengthening the traditionally very good mathematical research collaborations between the two countries.

  • SURFER Competition was organized by the ENI at Bar-Ilan University in Israel from December 2015 – October 2016, in collaboration with the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach. Submissions came from throughout Israel and the competition was held during the entire year 2016. Images of algebraic surfaces generated with the program SURFER were collected.

  • Emmy Noether reading corner. A permanent exhibition of books by and about Emmy Noether, Including original documents.
