The equicardinality of the bases of a matroid is independent of ZFC
In the 1960s, Higgs showed that under GCH, any two bases of a matroid have the same size. More recently, Bowler and Geschke proved that this fails assuming Martin's Axiom (MA_{w1}, to be precise). We present these results without assuming any prior knowledge of matroid theory.
