Gordian Unlinks
A knot or link made of rope has thickness and fixed length, but knot theory studies the rather different 1-dimensional loops. Distinguishing such objects requires different techniques than traditional knot theoryA gordian unlink is a thick unlink that cannot be split by an isotopy that preserves length and thickness. This means that no such isotopy moves the link so that any two components are separated by a plane. In this paper, we give the first examples of gordian unlinks.
