Approximation properties of locally compact (quantum) groups via convolution semigroups

We present new and old results about characterizing approximation properties of locally compact (quantum) groups in terms of continuous-time random walks, namely convolution semigroups. The new results focus on amenability, especially in conjugation with other properties. Most of the talk will focus on groups and will not assume familiarity with quantum groups.
