A stationary 2-local presentation of the alternating groups

Following ideas of Vershik and Vsemirnov, we provide a stationary 2-local presentation for the alternating groups via a loose chain of 3-cycles. As an application, we present the alternating groups as the amalgamated product of smaller alternating groups modulo commutation. This is joint work with David Garber.
